The N95 mask is a paper-based respirator used to prevent inhaling particles such as dust, smoke or other airborne chemicals. It doesn’t protect against gases or vapors, and it’s not intended to be used for long periods of time — it’s only good for about an hour before you should replace it with a new one.
If someone in your household has asthma or allergies, that person should have one in their bedroom closet at all times. However, if you don’t need one for any reason and you don’t want to keep the expired ones around (and who does!), here are some ways to dispose of them safely:
You can throw the N95 mask in a brown paper bag and put it in the trash.

3. Cover yourself or your nose properly
- Cover your nose, mouth, and chin with the mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask. Remember to:
- Check that the mask is covering your nose, mouth, and chin.
- Check for any gaps
4. Pinch the metal bridge clip at the nose to create a custom fit for your nose
Now you can breathe easily through the mask. To ensure a custom fit for your nose, use your thumb and forefinger to pinch the metal bridge clip at the nose of the mask. The clip will slide into place when you pinch it. This is important because it ensures that air can flow freely through your mouth and/or nose while wearing this respirator or face shield.
If you wear a disposable surgical mask, make sure to follow these steps to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
